A New Logic of Beliefs: Monotonic and Non-Monotonic Beliefs - Part 1

چکیده

We present here a new formalization of beliefs, which has a simpler semantics than the previous formalizations, and develop an inference method for it by generalizing the resolution method. The usual prepositional formulas are embedded in our logic as a special type of belief formulas. One can obtain a non-monotonic logic of beliefs by applying, say, circumscription to the basic belieflogic developed here which is monotonic in nature. One can also apply the technique repeatedly to construct a hierarchy of belief-logics BL k , k 1, where BLk BLk-1 and BLk can handle formulas involving up to level k nested applications of the belief operator B.

Reconsidering AGM-Style Belief Revision in the Context of Logic Programs

Belief revision has been studied mainly with respect to background logics that are monotonic in character. In this paper we study belief revision when the underlying logic is non-monotonic instead— an inherently interesting problem that is under explored. In particular, we will focus on the revision of a body of beliefs that is represented as a logic program under the answer set semantics, whil...

A Hybrid Representation of Knowledge and Belief

Agents working in an environment with incomplete information may need not only knowledge, but also beliefs to supplement their information. Default Logics have been frequently used to represent beliefs. Since inconsistent beliefs give rise to different extensions (scenarios), priorities are introduced to establish a preference among scenarios. We present a hybrid framework in which beliefs are ...

Belief Revision in Non-Monotonic Reasoning and Logic Programming

In order to be able to explicitly reason about beliefs, we've introduced a non-monotonic formalism, called the Autoepistemic Logic of Beliefs, AEB, obtained by augmenting classical propositional logic with a belief operator, B. For this language we've deened the static autoepistemic expansions semantics. The resulting non-monotonic knowledge representation framework turned out to be rather simp...

LogAG: An Algebraic Non-Monotonic Logic for Reasoning with Uncertainty

We present a weighted algebraic non-monotonic logic we refer to as LogAG for reasoning with uncertain beliefs. In LogAG, the classical logical formulas could be associated with ordered grades representing measures of uncertainty. The revision of beliefs in LogAG, when contradictions arise, is done according to the grades of the contradictory propositions. Throughout the paper, we present the sy...

Autoepistemic Logic of Knowledge and Beliefs

In recent years, various formalizations of non-monotonic reasoning and diierent semantics for normal and disjunctive logic programs have been proposed, including autoepistemic stationary and static semantics of normal and disjunctive logic programs. In this paper we introduce a simple non-monotonic knowledge representation framework which isomorphically contains all of the above mentioned non-m...
